Bay Springs, Heidelberg sweep tourney openers

HEIDELBERG — The Bay Springs Lady Bulldogs got the Heidelberg tourney started off with a win over Laurel Tuesday as they downed the Lady Tornadoes 83-58.

Shumond Hughes led Bay Springs in scoring with 32 points followed by Casey McCurdy with 18 points, and London Thomas added 14 points for the winners.

Amber Nicholson led Laurel with 16 points, while Lakera McGilberry added 12 points, and Chikayla Walker chipped in 13 points for the Lady Tornadoes.

The Lady Bulldogs led 36-30 at halftime, but broke it open in the second half as they led 56-42 at the end of the third quarter before winning the game 83-58.

In the boys game, Bay Springs downed Laurel by the score of 52-44.

The Bulldogs were led by Johnathan Duckworth with 24 points, followed by Demond Hughes with 10 points. The Tornadoes were led in scoring by Desmond Bridges with 15 points and Josh Agee chipped in 8 points in the losing effort.

The Bulldogs opened up a 9-0 lead before leading 22-20 at the break. Laurel took the lead at 25-22 as the game was tied at 34-34 after the third quarter.

Heidelberg vs. Northeast Jones

The Heidelberg Lady Oilers won easily over the Lady Tigers in the Heidelberg tourney as they downed Northeast Jones 57-36.

Quentisha Jones led the Lady Oilers with 9 points, followed by Eureeka Carr, Kayla Barber ,and Brittany Cooley with 7 points each in the victory.

Nesy Read led NEJ with 13 points, and Kadie Parker had 9 points.

In the boys game, the Oilers won handily over the Tigers with a 58-26 thrashing.

Tyrone Strickland led all scorers with 9 points, while O.W. Turner and Oliver Stevens had 8 points each, and Justin Arrington, and Frank Martin chipped in 6 points each for the Oilers.

Taquil Duckworth, and Donnie McGill both had 6 points each, and Shardaryl Slater added 4 points for the Tigers.
