Here are the headlines from the Laurel Leader-Call past editions. This week July 21-27 will be featured from past years of 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998.

July 21, 1958
Laurel downed Hattiesburg 6-4 in the Babe Ruth District tournament. Tony Parrish, Irvin Hitt, Billy Burnett, Billy Sumrall, Larry Montgomery, Eddie Loper, Ed Bryant, and John Harrelson all had hits for the Laurel stars.

July 21, 1998
Will White was the winning pitcher and had two hits in leading Laurel/Jones County Pre-Majors over Petal 9-3 in the state tournament. Craig Bush, Michael Aycock, Andy Gresham, Alex Warren, and Adam Quinn each added hits for the winners.

July 22, 1988
Roy Gene Sullins, Brad Payne, Rocky Ford, Jay Hassell. Brad Rowland, Justin Lewis, Austin Bolan, Nathan Dillon, Winston Shows, Larry Johnson, Roy Nowell, Stacy Robinson, Chris Windham, Lance Jones, and Scott Luter were on the Laurel Nationals All-Stars that finished runner-up in the District Dixie Youth All-Star tournament. Jim Allred was the manager while Charles Dillon, David Jones, and Phill Wells were the assistant coaches.

July 23, 1998
Iowa State basketball coach Tim Floyd, a Hattiesburg native, has been named the coach of the Chicago Bulls.

July 24, 1978
Tony Taylor, Steve Breland, and Ronald Davis all had two hits as the Laurel/Jones County Dixie Major All-Stars walloped Wayne County 13-2 in the opening game of the state tournament here in Laurel at Legion Field. Marty James, Mitch Wells, Miles Hathorn, Cotton Moore, and Chuck Odom added hits. Steve Breland was the winning hurler while Steve Pope took the loss. Kevin Satcher and Pope had the only hits for Wayne County.

July 25, 1968
Dale Keyes blasted a two-run home run as the Laurel Dixie Senior All-Stars whipped Petal 6-1 in the District 6 tournament. Al Wallace, Rick Davis, and Sammy Evans all added key hits. James Royals was the winning hurler as he pitched a six-hitter.

July 25, 1998
James “Luke” Leggett has been named head baseball coach at Laurel High to replace J.D. Holliman. Leggett has been with the school system since 1994.
