After remaining undefeated through tournament play this week in the Dixie Boys Mississippi State Tournament, Laurel-Jones County proved why they deserved to be in the Dixie Boys World Series after whipping Petal 10-4 in Wednesday night’s championship contest.

Laurel-Jones County jumped on Petal quickly, scoring three times in the first inning. Trenton Stringer took home on a passed ball to get things going. Josh Sullivan doubled to center field to drive in Chandler Blakeney and Eric Surrett followed with a single to left field to score Sullivan.

After holding Petal scoreless in the bottom of the first, Jaylon Keyes doubled to left center field in the second inning, scoring Blakeney and Stringer, as Laurel-Jones County held a 5-0 advantage.

Laurel-Jones County added a sixth run in the top of the third inning when Surrett hit a solo home run in center field. Petal finally answered in the bottom of the third inning when Jared James came home on a Laurel-Jones County infield error. Drew Smith earned a RBI on a fielders choice to score Kyle Smith. Ben Swaford and Jalin Boney both scored on errors made by the Laurel-Jones County infield, as Petal trailed 6-4 to close out the third inning.

Blakeney earned another RBI with a double to right center field that drove in Blake Shows, as Laurel-Jones County led 7-4.

After holding Petal scoreless, Surrett came home plate on a balk. Shows bunted down the first base line to score Kelton Grice. Blakeney finished off the scoring frenzy with a RBI on a fielders choice to bring in Trenton Stringer with the final run.

With the win, Laurel-Jones County will travel to Enterprise, Ala., to compete in the Dixie Boys World Series.
