Golden Tornadoes tennis team knocks off Oak Grove
LAUREL — Laurel defeated Oak Grove’s tennis team Thursday 4-3 at the Laurel Sportsplex.
In boys singles, Laurel’s Andrew Cockrell lost to Oak Grove’s Brock Hurston 6-0, 6-0; in girls singles, Hanna Burson defeated Jamae Norwood 6-0, 6-0.
In the first boys doubles match, JP Asmar and Josh Agee lost to Zach Shurden and Jacob Weis 6-2, 6-2; in the second Stevens Bateman and Nash Evans lost to Ben Hurston and Daniel Lawrence 6-2, 6-0.
In the girls doubles matches Jillian McNeese and Anna Axton defeated Cory Zachary and Rebecca Rogers 6-4, 7-5. Mary Beth Weber and Shelby gatewood defeated Ali Norman and Taylor Vallareal 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
In mixed doubles play, Alexa Owens and Jeremy Purdum defeated Chris Geba and Mary Lois Hanna 6-2, 6-0.
The Golden Tornadoes move to 6-1 on the season and will take on Northeast Jones Tuesday at the Sportsplex for a 3:30 p.m. start time.
Jeremy Wise Named CollegeHoops.net High-Major Honorable Mention All-American
HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss sophomore Jeremy Wise earned CollegeHoops.net High Major Honorable Mention All-American honors in a vote by staff writers, announced today.
Wise led the Golden Eagles this season with 18.7 points and 4.2 assists, en route to placing second on the sophomore scoring list with 617 points. He is also the first Golden Eagle to record 500 points in back-to-back seasons since Clarence Weatherspoon from 1989 to 1992.
On February 20 against SMU, Wise became the second fastest player in Southern Miss history to reach 1,000 career points.
The Jackson, Miss. native was the only player to start all 33 games for the Golden Eagles this season, and scored in double-figures in 31 of 33 games, including the last 15. The All-Conference USA performer also scored 20-plus points in 14 games, including a career-high 33 at Alabama on November 23.
