Awesome adjective activities at East Jones Elementary

Lori Herrington’s third grade class at East Jones Elementary School has been involved with awesome adjective activities. To be introduced to adjectives, The Adjective Lady, Herrington visited the students. The Adjective Lady wore mismatched clothing. The students were invited to observe her outfit closely, and they were asked to use multiple adjectives to describe the attire of the special guest. The third grade class created appetizing restaurant menus by using adjectives to describe each menu item. After viewing menus from various restaurants, the students paired up to brainstorm adjectives that would describe food items. The students enjoyed creating their own restaurant and menu and wrote a short description using the adjectives that they came up with during the brainstorming session. Students wrote a poem about their favorite color. They were able to express their feelings about a single color with analogies or similes or list nouns which reminded them that color. They could also use their five senses to describe the colors. In order to better understand adjectives, each student made an Adjective Monster. Students were able to explore the connections between visual art and language arts through this activity. Students used paper sculpture techniques and geometric shapes. After making their monsters, the students generated adjective bubble maps. The students added words that described their monsters to the graphic organizer. Students create a monster’s face, using some paper sculpture techniques, and will learn about basic geometric shapes.Students also participated in the Bag It Adjective Project. In this activity, each student placed an item from home inside a bag and wrote adjectives on the outside to describe the item. The classmates used to the adjectives to form guesses about the object inside the bags. If the class could not guess the object, the students revealed their items. The students read the book Many Luscious Lollipops which explained what adjectives are.
