Guided Only by Him

By Tracy Traylor, columnist

When God led the Israelites out of Egypt, soon they were at the borders of the Promised Land. They sent spies to check it out, and they came back terrified because giants were there.

God had shown His power to the Israelites by parting the Red Sea and giving manna for them to eat, etc. He promised He was with them and they would defeat their enemies. However, that wasn’t enough assurance for them; they gave into their worldly feelings of fear and unbelief. They decided that they would rather be guided by themselves than to be guided by God.

God was angry that they did not believe and trust Him. Because of their disobedience, they wandered in the wilderness for forty years. That was an unnecessary detour that could have been avoided if they had only trusted in the Lord’s guidance. They could have been living happily in the land God had promised them, but instead of relying on God’s guidance and promises, they chose to rely on themselves.

Doesn’t that sound like us? We want all God has promised us, but we are afraid of all the “giants” that might harm us. We say we are a Christian and we trust God, but deep down we fear that the “giants” are too powerful for our God.

If we are scared to do what God has asked us to do, surely we are tired of being a “wilderness Christian” who seems to be getting nowhere in our Christian life. The only way to get to the “Promised Land” (the abundant life in Christ) is if we decide to be guided only by Him. He really can and will take care of our “giants.”
