Council prepares for Holiday Home Tour
It’s that time of year again. The chill in the air leads way for winter events including the annual Holiday Home Tour. The Council of Garden Clubs of Laurel and Jones County recently met to discuss the 35th annual Christmas Tour of Homes to be held Sunday, Dec. 2 from 2-5 p.m. Tickets are available for a small donation. “This is our one fundraiser of the year for our Council of Garden Clubs,” said Jimmie Nell Long, chairwoman of the Holiday Home Tour. “We use the money for horticulture scholarships at JCJC and to plant flower beds around the city.” This past year the Council ordered a bench to place in Gardiner Park to commemorate the town’s 125th birthday celebration. They have also used funds from the tour to plant shrubbery at the Rogers Green House for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art and also planted trees after Hurricane Katrina. The next big project of the Council is to create new landscaping for the Veterans Museum. A professional horticulturist/landscaper has offered their services for free and the Council will supply the flowers and plants. This year the Holiday Home Tour will feature two homes and a historic church, all in located in Ellisville. The homes featured in the tour are the home of Bobby and Suzanne Knox, located at 18 Griffin Drive and the home of Rick and Sandra Sumrall, located at 16 Neil Road. Ellisville Presbyterian Church located at 201 E. Ivy Street will also be featured. “It seemed like Laurel needed a break from the tour and Ellisville has so many new homes.” Long said. “I started asking people in Ellisville. They were so gracious and enthusiastic about it the Council decided to hold the tour there.” “We wanted to feature the church because its so historical and we thought it would really be an asset for people coming in and learning new things about Ellisville,” Long said. “There are some great things going on in Ellisville. Downtown is starting to grow.” The event also hosts a tea which will be held at the Sumrall home. Long also asks that tour participants wear sensible shoes so as not to scratch hardwood floors. For ticket information contact any garden club member or call 601-477-2137 for more information.

Get Involved!
Everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by heart disease or other cardiac related illness. So why not become more involved in the fundraisers held to benefit the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walk. South Central Regional Medical Center will hold the Annual Charity Drop on Saturday, Sept. 22 at South Central Place at 10 a.m. Tickets are on sale for $5 per square with a prize of $1,000. Face painting and jumps will be available for the tots while Country Cooks will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for sale. Coca-Cola Bottling will supply drinks for sale. I encourage everyone to spare $5 for the cost of a ticket and benefit the Association. Who knows it might be your lucky day. Also SCRMC will hold its annual Waiter 4 A Day event on Tues., Sept. 25 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Medical Center cafeteria. Hospital directors will be serving as waiters and will work for "tips" which in turn will benefit the Association. A special menu is planned for $5. So instead of running by the fast food joint stop by the cafeteria. You'll not only leave with your hunger satisfied but also know you helped in funding the Association's heart research. Delivery orders can be made by calling 601-426-4228 by 2 p.m. Sept. 24. So mark your calendar for these two very important dates. They might just benefit someone you know.
