Bobcats, ladies win home opener

By Shawn Wansley, JCJC Sports Information Director

ELLISVILLE – It was a good way for the defending state champions to open the home portion of the 2009-10 basketball schedule.

Jones County Junior College took a pair of games from Delgado Community College (La.) here Thursday night at Bobcat Gym.

The Lady Bobcats went on a 10-0 run late in the first half – keyed by eight straight points by Dominique Evans – and went on to whip the Lady Dolphins, 65-45.

In the men’s game, JCJC overcame a seven-point halftime deficit, outscored the visitors 63-41 in the second half and posted a 102-87 decision.

The Bobcat teams will be on the road to Mobile, Ala., on Tuesday to meet Bishop State Community College. The women’s game tips off at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:15.

The next home game for JCJC will be on Monday, Nov. 16, vs. Northeast Mississippi Community College. The women’s game will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m. Those games will mark the debut of audio broadcasts of Bobcat basketball on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman calling the play-by-play and Mark Easley providing commentary.

The first game to be televised on www.jcjc.tv will be on Thursday, Dec. 3, when the Bobcats host Pearl River in South Division play.

Delgado led 10-9 midway through the first half before Jones took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Kerri Simmons.

JCJC was up 22-16 with around five minutes to play when they used a decisive 10-0 run to take control. During that stretch, Evans hit a 3-pointer from the right corner, made a two-pointer and then added another 3-pointer. Kianna Harris also had a field goal during that stretch.

The Lady Bobcats were up 32-20 at halftime and scored the first nine points of the second half to take command. JCJC took its longest lead at 58-28 with 9:48 remaining when Ashley Lee scored.

Evans, a sophomore from South Jones, led the balanced Lady Bobcat attack with 12 points. Harris added 10 and Simmons had nine.

Jamey Ellis paced Delgado with 16 points.
