Jones County Junior College’s offense looked to be in mid-season form Thursday in a season-opening victory over Itawamba Community College.

Sophomore running back Daniel Borne scored three touchdowns and the No. 7 Bobcats blasted the 20th-ranked Indians 35-7 in front of a large pro-JCJC crowd in Ellisville.

It was a dominating performance.

Jones (1-0) scored on just their second offensive play of the game after forcing the Indians (0-1) to punt on their opening drive — the first of nine Itawamba punts. Quarterback Early James hit a wide open Rafael Pollard for a 47-yard completion and the sophomore signal-caller found Tristan Purifoy with a 4-yard TD pass on the very next play.

The quarter ended 7-0, but then the Bobcats ignited in the second stanza.

Borne scored on the first play of the second period, breaking three tackles from two yards out. The TD capped a 12-play, 64-yard march.

The Indians offensive woes continued on their first play following the TD when sophomore linebacker Demorio Leverett scooped a botched hand-off and went 30 yards in for the touchdown. Jacob Chancellor’s third extra point made it 21-0.

The Bobcats added two more scores before the half ended with Borne scoring from a yard out with 7:55 to play to culminate a 73-yard drive and the big back from Avondale, La., added another 1-yard plunge with 1:37 to play in the half that ended a 62-yard drive.

Chancellor added a 24-yard field goal with just over a minute to play in the third quarter for the only Bobcats score of the second half.

The Indians finally managed a first down with 9:30 to play in the third quarter and scored their only TD of the night when Kenard Springer scored on a 2-yard run with 9:37 to play in the game.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Sept. 6 when they host East Mississippi Community College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Ellisville.
