Laurel 14s back in the winners bracket

HATTIESBURG – Tyler Reeves fired a one-hitter and slapped two singles in leading Laurel/Jones County past Hattiesburg 10-0 here Monday afternoon in the 14-Year-Old State Dixie Boys baseball tournament being played at Kamper Park.

“Tyler Reeves was the star of the game,” said L-JC manager Kerry Hill talking about his pitcher’s effort against Hattiesburg.

Laurel scored four runs in the third inning and then tallied six times in the fifth inning to claim the win. L-JC only had five hits in the game but used six walks and several Hattiesburg errors to tally ten times.

Tyler Roney, Evan Gieger, and Dequan Heidelberg all singled for the winners.

In other action Monday, Kosciusko whipped Magee 11-1 and Columbia eliminated Petal 12-8. Tuesday’s play will have Yazoo City and Columbia leading off the day’s events at 2 p.m. followed by Magee and Laurel/Jones County at 4:30 p.m. The nightcap will have Pascagoula and Kosciusko playing at 7 p.m.

13-Year-Old State Tournament

CLEVELAND – Deion Ulmer pitched five scoreless innings in leading Laurel/Jones County past Pascagoula 5-0 here Monday night in the State Dixie Boys Tournament.

Jared Grice had the key blow in the game as he belted a bases-loaded double in a four-run third inning. L-JC also scored a single run in the sixth inning.

L-JC will play undefeated Petal tonight at 7 p.m. in a winner’s bracket contest. In the early game at 4 p.m. Hattiesburg and Pascagoula will play an elimination contest. Magee has the bye as five teams remain in the tournament. In other Monday action, Hattiesburg dropped Cleveland and Magee won over Lawrence County. Jackson, Lawrence County, Natchez, and Cleveland have all been eliminated from the tourney.

Ulmer, Chase Smith, Randy Duhon, and Jared Ingram all added singles in the win.

Ulmer was the winning pitcher as he hurled five innings and fanned four batters and allowed only two hits. Blake Strickland completed the final two innings as he held Pascagoula hitless and fanned three batters.
