The Bayou Academy Colts or the Heidelberg Academy Rebels will have a winning streak stopped here today at 4 p.m. in the opening game of the overall Class A MPSA baseball playoffs.
The Rebels (30-3) have won 28 straight games, while the defending State A Champions of Bayou have an impressive 23 winning streak.
Bayou (27-2) defeated the Deer Creek Warriors 11-7 to complete a two-game series sweep and capture the North A State Baseball Championship for a second straight year. Heidelberg Academy downed Wilkinson County Christian Academy in two games last week for the South State title.
“This is it,” Bayou head coach Rodney Martin told the Bolivar Commercial in Cleveland in a Monday interview. “We made it to the big show. That’s what we’re shooting for and that’s where we’re at. It says a lot for the guys, and it says a lot for the school over what we’ve accomplished over the last few years. I’m proud of them.”
The second game will be at Heidelberg on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a third game, if necessary, set for Saturday.
Heidelberg Academy won state championships in 2001 and 2004.
