Ala-Miss Classic returns to Dec. weekend
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic will be played on Saturday, Dec. 13.
The date announced Friday moves the game back to the weekend. It was played on a Monday last December after being staged on the first Saturday in June since its inception in 1988.
The move to December was made necessary by the earlier summer reporting date required of many senior players by their respective colleges and universities.
The move is designed to give coaches a better opportunity to attend the game. The afternoon kickoff will give players more travel time to get home afterward.
Spain Park coach John Grass will lead the Alabama team.
Lady Bobcats finish No. 23 in the nation
TUCSON, Ariz. – The NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Tournament wrapped up here Thursday at the Randolph Tennis Center.
The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats posted 12 points, which was good enough for a No. 23 finish in the final standings. There were 36 teams competing.
Hillsborough Community College out of Tampa, Fla., was the champion, putting up 45 points. Tyler Junior College of Texas was second with 44 points and Lee College of Baytown, Texas, was third with 43 points.
Competing for coach Mark Easley’s Lady Bobcats in the nationals were Lauren Wallace of Simpson Academy, Erica Walker and Bess Butler of South Jones, Rachel Whaley of Quitman, J.J. Benson of West Jones and Kelsey Roberts of Oak Grove.
Gray beards lead the way at TPC
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Hot blasts of wind on a diabolical course made The Players Championship tough enough to turn someone’s hair gray. Not that the leaders needed any help with that Friday.
Kenny Perry, who first showed up at Sawgrass 20 years ago, kept his wits and his patience in 35 mph gusts and made only one bogey in a solid round of 2-under 70 that gave him a one-shot lead at 6 under going into the weekend.
He will be paired with Bernhard Langer, who already has won twice this year — on the Champions Tour.
The two-time Masters champion and former Ryder Cup captain thought about withdrawing Thursday morning when he felt pain in his lower back, which caused his groin and left knee to ache, along with his left shoulder. All those creaking joints, and the 50-year-old Langer still managed to produce a 67 and entertain hopes of winning against kids who weren’t even born when he won his first Masters.
