Area well-represented in state 4A meet

Laurel, Northeast Jones boys and girls and West Jones girls track teams will all compete in the MHSAA State Track and Field Championship Meet today at 2 p.m. at Pearl High School in Pearl.

The Laurel boys team won first place at South State and West Jones girls finished second at South State on May 3 in Gulfport. Laurel girls and Northeast Jones boys and girls track teams also qualified to go to the state championship meet in Pearl.

Placing for Laurel boys track team at Gulfport were as follows:, first in the 4x200 meter relay - Akeen Davis, Clifton Pollock, Deontra McInnis, and Thomas Gosha; fourth in the 400 meter dash - Thomas Gosha; third in the 100 meter dash - Clifton Pollock; fourth in the 200 meter dash - Clifton Pollock; second in the 300 meter hurdles - Deontra McInnis; sixth in the 1600 meter run - Justin Semmons.

Placing for Laurel girls track team at Gulfport were as follows: second in the discus - Amber Husband; third in the long jump - Leslie Mosley; sixth in the 4x200 meter relay - Leslie Mosley, Jakendall Arrington, Jasmine Jones, and Porsche Moultrie; and fifth in the 4x100 meter relay - Leslie Mosley, Jakendall Arrington, Jasmine Jones, and Porsche Moultrie.

West Jones won the district and were runners-up in both the regional and South State Championship. They were led by Ole Miss track signee Kristin Bridges.

Top winners for the Lady Mustangs were Kristin Bridges in the 100 and 200 meter runs. Bridges recorded the second fastest time in the state this year and set a new South State record in the 100 and 200 meters. Bridget Dennis won the pole vault with a height of 9’ft - 6”in, which is a new South State record. Dennis also finished third in the high jump.

Marissa Hathorne won the triple jump with a leap of 34’ft - 11”in, also a new South State record. Hathorne came in second in the 100 meter and third in the 200 meter.

The team of Bridges, Shaniqua Jones, Sara Coleman, and Hathorne won the 4x100 meter relay and set a new South State record. Shaniqua Jones placed third in the 110 high hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Jones, Miracle Musgrove, Coleman, and Bridges finished second in the 4x200 meter relay. Coleman finished third and Musgrove finished fifth in the 400 meter dash. The relay team of Musgrove, Kenyetta Flowers, Shanice Musgrove, and Coleman placed fifth in the 4x400 meter relay.

Isaac Coleman from the West Jones boys track team placed fourth in the 800 meter run and will be going to the State meet in Pearl.

Top five finishers for Northeast Jones girls track team were, Courtney Thornton, fifth in the 3200 meter run, Courtney Sumrall, fifth in the high jump, and Kerri Simmons, second in the shot put and first in the discus throw.

Top five finishers for Northeast Jones boys track team were, Darius Rogers, first in the 110 meters hurdles, Tyler Zugg, first in the 300 meter hurdles, and Ramon Blakeney, second in the long jump.
