JCJC’s Walker opens with win



TUCSON, Ariz. – Erica Walker of Jones County Junior College won her opening round match in No. 1 singles here at the NJCAA Women’s Division I Tennis Tournament Sunday at the Randolph Tennis Center.

Walker, a South Jones sophomore, defeated Brittney Osborn of North Central Texas College, 6-2, 6-2. Walker will face Nadia Lee of Lee College (Texas) at 11:30 a.m. on Monday in her next match.

The Lady Bobcats had five other competitors in action on Sunday.

In No. 2 singles, Rachel Whaley of Jones lost to Dania Navarro of St. Petersburg Community College (Fla.), 6-0, 6-2. Whaley faces Kristina McWethy of Sauk Valley Community College (Ill.) in a consolation match at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.

In No. 3 singles, J.J. Benson of Jones fell to Courtney Brewer of Harford Community College (Md.), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Benson meets Kesha McConaha-Schultz of Kalamazoo Valley Community College (Mich.) at 9:30 a.m. Monday in a consolation match.

Mary Carole Kiewit of Jones dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Chelsey Lynn of Jacksonville Community College (Fla.) in No. 4 singles.

Kiewit will face Cecilia Sanchez of Lewis and Clark Community College (Ill.) at 9:30 a.m. Monday in a consolation match.

In No. 5 singles, JCJC’s Tiffany Hudson fell to Natalie Foster of Temple College (Texas), 6-3, 6-1. Hudson takes on the winner between Courtney Diebold of Kalamazoo Valley and Vanessa McCall of St. Petersburg in a 10:30 a.m. consolation match on Tuesday.

In No. 6 singles, Rebecca Rogers of Jones lost to Kristen Baker of Temple College, 6-0, 6-1. Rogers meets Agnes Burke of Harford at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday in consolation action.

Doubles matches begin Monday with all of the Lady Bobcat teams in action.

In No. 1 doubles, Walker and Whaley will face Iris Rendon and Anna Zurek of Tyler Junior College (Texas) at 3 p.m. In No. 2 doubles, Benson and Meredith Johnson face Kayla Arbuthnot and Katie Maberry of Lewis and Clark at 3:30 p.m.

In No. 3 doubles, Rogers and Jillian McNeese face Sarah Gaddy and Lindsay Farmer of Grand Rapids Community College (Mich.) at 4:30 p.m.
