William Jones’ military career was full of close calls, chance happenings, and most importantly divine providence. For Jones his two years in the Army, where he served as a medic during the Korean War, is an experience he will never forget.

Jones has used the stories of his experiences to not only inform, but to encourage. While teaching English at R.H. Watkins High School, where he retired with 34 years, Jones used his stories to impact his students. He also took interest in those living in his neighborhood.

A former neighbor and family friend, whose name can’t be released for security reasons due to his work in Iraq, never forgot the words and love of Jones. To honor Jones for Veterans Day, the neighbor sent a very special gift to Jones. A flag, flown over the headquarters of the Multi-National Corps-Iraq, and a signed certificate where “to a man I will always look up to” was written.

“I was humbled, and I was thrilled that someone would think of me,” Jones said. “I feel so honored to receive that gift.”
