A traffic accident at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 59 diverted traffic for several hours while crews worked to clear the roadway. Logs from an 18-wheeler were spilled across the northbound lanes of I-59 at 16th Avenue in Laurel.

The driver of the log truck and the driver of another vehicle traveling north were treated and released with minor injuries. Information on the two people was not available.

Officials at the scene said the log truck was attempting to merge onto the interstate from 16th Avenue when the load shifted, causing the 18-wheeler to roll over. A vehicle traveling north, driven by a woman, impacted two of the logs, inflicting extensive damage to the vehicle. The woman was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center, treated and released, according to authorities.

Northbound traffic was diverted off I-59 at the South Laurel exit onto Ellisville Boulevard. Laurel police and fire department units directed traffic to South 16th Avenue, where vehicles were able to get back on the roadway.

By 9 a.m., cleanup crews had all but moved away all the logs and other debris from the accident. The interstate was reopened at about 9:30 a.m.
