Explosion at oil well site
No injuries reported; some people evacuated from homes
From staff reports
HEIDELBERG — No injuries were reported in a Wednesday afternoon explosion at a Jasper County oil well site.
Mike Lucas, Director of the Jasper County Emergency Management Service, said he responded to an explosion site near Heidelberg. Lucas said the incident occurred about 3 p.m. at a Denbury well site on County Road 33 near Heidelberg.
“It didn’t occur at the company plant, but at one of its well sites,” said Lucas. “They had a CO2 tank to explode, causing a problem.”
Lucas said no injuries were reported form the incident and all damage was contained to the site.
“Everything was under control by 5 p.m.,” the EMS director said. “We had a few people in a couple of houses that were evacuated for about an hour. Everything was determined to be okay and they were allowed to return home.”
Lucas, who contacted the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, said officials are continuing to investigate the incident.
Lucas said Denbury officials contacted the Oil and Gas Board.
