BAY SPRINGS — The Jasper County Board of Supervisors handled several county matters during its meeting Monday at the Jasper County Courthouses in Paulding and Bay Springs.

During its Bay Springs’ portion of the meeting, the supervisors began making decisions about the county’s holiday schedule and various county issues.

Chancery Clerk Barbara Ravenhorst informed the board of Gov. Haley Barbour’s proclamation concerning the closing of state offices in observance of the holidays.

Barbour has issued a proclamation to close state offices on Nov. 26 in observance of Thanksgiving Day; Dec. 25 in observance of Christmas Day and Jan. 1, 2010 in observance of New Year’s Day. According to the governor’s proclamation, agency heads may close offices on Nov. 27, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 at their own discretion.

The supervisors unanimously approved the county’s holiday schedule to include Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving; Dec. 24 and 25 for Christmas and Dec. 31, 2009 and Jan. 1, 2010 for New Year’s.

Supervisor Johnny Rowell, president of the board of supervisors, said the specified dates approved by the supervisors would allow Jasper County employees time to observe the various holidays without much inconvenience to the taxpayers.

In other business Monday, the supervisors asked the county attorney and tax assessor to begin investigating equipment assessments.

Board attorney Ricky Ruffin said he and the county’s tax assessor will begin pursuing information regarding whether some companies have had construction equipment in the county for the allowed statutory period of time for the equipment to be assessed by Jasper County.

Also Monday, the supervisors discussed the Rose Hill Voting Precinct project and the American Fire and Safety at the Jasper County Career Development Center.

The board also unanimously approved the demolition of the old office complex next to the Nutrition Center in Heidelberg in Beat 5.

Justice Court Judge Marvin Jones also talked to the board concerning operations at Justice Court; and the board approved a request from Mike Lucas, director of the Jasper County Emergency Management, to replenish some equipment for his agency at a cost of $768.60 to come out of the county’s general funds.

In other business, the supervisors approved adjustments to the real and personal property 2008 roll as presented by Tax Assessor Collector Pattie Ishee; approved an ad for the 2010 Legislative Issue of the Mississippi Supervisors Magazine; approved expenses for Doug Hill for defense technology training in Meridian on Nov. 9; agreed to advertise for the sale of a 2008 Top Hat Trailer inventoried to Beat 4; and approved the quotes previously accepted by the purchase clerk for a steel-wheel roller and a power boom.
