Stabbing case going to grand jury
LPD investigating man’s death following domestic incident

By Eloria Newell James, community@laurelleadercall.com

Officials with the Laurel Police Department are continuing to investigate the death of a Laurel man that resulted from a domestic incident.

LPD Detective Kevin Flynn said Brian Sims, 28, of Hayes Street in Laurel, died Thursday from injuries received during a domestic incident on Tuesday around noon.

Flynn said the incident resulting in Sims’ death occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at an apartment in Johnson Circle.

“On Tuesday, police officers answered a domestic disturbance call at Building 17 in Johnson Circle around 11 a.m., where a male subject, later identified as Sims, had kicked in the door of the residence,” the detective explained. “During a verbal argument at the apartment, Sims’ 26-year-old girlfriend was assaulted (hit). She later came to the Laurel Police Station and signed domestic charges against the male.”

Flynn said this was the first of two incidents involving the couple to occur during that particular day.

“After the female made it back home, Sims allegedly came back,” the detective said during a press conference Friday. “She ran from her apartment to the neighbor’s apartment, where she hid in the back bedroom. He allegedly kicked the apartment door down and then kicked in the bedroom door.

“According to the statements we’ve received, another altercation occurred,” the detective confirmed. “During that altercation, a witness came to assist the female and tried to pull him off of the girlfriend, and during the process the male subject, Sims, was stabbed in the stomach area.”

Flynn said when police arrived, Sims had been transported by private vehicle to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment of a stabbed wound to the torso and his girlfriend had gone to the police department.

“We went to the hospital and the hospital advised us that he (Sims) was going to have to have surgery,” the detective explained. “Right now, we know that he was stabbed at least once.”

Flynn said police were notified Thursday morning by the Jones County Coroner Nancy Barnett that Sims died on Thursday at SCRMC.

The detective said the coroner has requested that an autopsy be performed. Sims’ body has been sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab for that autopsy.

Flynn said the police department is continuing to investigate the incident.

“We have obtained some statements,” Flynn said. “We have a lot of loose ends to tie up.”

The detective said the investigation has revealed that a lot of people saw the incident, but did not try to stop it.

“We had a bunch of people standing around who saw this domestic assault occur and did nothing,” he said.
