TAYLORSVILLE — There was dancing in the streets in Downtown Taylorsville Thursday evening as area residents celebrated life and breast cancer awareness.

It was all a part of the “Pink Lemonade Party”, a special event sponsored by Taylorsville Florist and Gifts, in association with the American Cancer Society.

Rain drops occasional fell on party goers during the event which was slated for 3 to 6 p.m. But by 5:30 p.m., “the clouds burst,” said Paige McCardle, community representative with the American Cancer Society.

“Still, we were able to raise more than $6,100.”

For Anna Jean Smith and Connie Ware, owners of Taylorsville Florist and Gifts, being able help the American Cancer Society is dear to their heart. The mother and daughter duo are breast cancer survivors.

“I’m a three year survivor, “ said Anna Jean Smith, 72. “My daughter, Connie was diagnosed before me. She had to have treatment, but they told me that because of my age, they wouldn’t recommend it.”

Smith also noted that three generations of her family had cancer. Her mother, Lottie Butler, who started the business in 1957, was also a cancer victim.

“That’s why it’s important for us to stress early detection,” said Ware, a 12-year cancer survivor. “This is our Fifth Annual Pink Lemonade Party.

“We celebrate life and what early detection can do for you if you act on the findings,” added Ware. “I was diagnosed early, at age 43, and I’m thankful for it.”

McCardle said she is glad to have the support of the business owners. In addition to sponsoring the party, she said Ware “has a special passion for life and often encourages and consoles women when they are first diagnosed with the disease. She is a wonderful woman.

“Taylorsville is filled with a lot of wonderful people,” added McCardle. “They came out and supported the event, despite the rain.

“We appreciate everyone,” said McCardle.

The Pink Lemonade party included door prizes, a health fair, Sidewalk Dessert Cafe, performances by Jones on Stage from Jones Junior College and other local singers and an appearance by the Potato Queens of Jones County.

Also, a number of items were included in a raffle and barbecue pulled pork plates were sold for $8. And of course, pink lemonade.
