AG asking for input on cemetery complaints

The Mississippi Attorney General’s office (AG) is actively seeking information from people who have problems with burial agreements connected with four cemeteries statewide. One of those cemeteries is Sunset Gardens of 1206 Wansley Rd., Laurel.
“We normally do not comment on criminal investigations unless we are seeking information on possible wrongdoing,” said Jan Schaefer, AG public information officer, in an e-mail to the Laurel Leader-Call Wednesday afternoon.
The other three cemeteries are Prentiss Memorial Gardens, 735 Highway 145 South, Baldwyn; Liberty Memorial Park, Highway 30, Booneville; and Pinecrest Memorial Park, Highway 9 South, Calhoun City. It is believed that all four cemeteries are owned by the same company.
Problems surfaced during the summer at Sunset Gardens, where the cemetery was not being maintained, and people with relatives buried in the cemetery had no access to the office, which had been closed. A spokesman for a cemetery committee formed subsequently said people felt like the owners of Sunset Gardens had deserted them. Similar problems began coming out about some of the other cemeteries.
The AG’s office confirmed to the Leader-Call Friday that it was initially investigating problems at Prentiss Memorial Gardens, but expanded its investigation to include Sunset Gardens and the other two cemeteries.
“We ask that anyone who has had problems or questions with their burial agreement with (the four cemeteries) to call our Division of Consumer Protection at 1-800-281-4418,” Schaefer said in the e-mail.
