Lightning strikes oil tank

To the Leader-Call

Lightning is being blamed for rupturing an oil tank Tuesday morning near Sandersville.

Sandersville Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported tank on fire at the McFarland Tank Battery around 5:45 a.m.

On the arrival of District 3 units from Sandersville and Rustin, they found one of the tanks on fire and ruptured. They discovered that a Hunt Oil Tanker and the driver were still attached to the field and assisted the driver in disconnecting the tank from the battery and removed the truck from danger while applying a water/foam concentrate to cool the exposed tanks.

As additional units from District 2 and 4 arrived, the fire in the original tank was extinguished.

Additional units from Jones County District 4 and District 5, along with a Jasper County tanker that were responding to the fire were canceled while enroute.

Departments assisting Sandersville and Rustin were Sharon, Powers, Glade, Ovett and Heidelberg from Jasper County. No injuries were reported.
