The Jones County Republican Women hosted a candidate for Mississippi Supreme Court and a statewide official at their meeting Wednesday.

Randy Bubba Pierce, a resident of Greene County, was appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour to fulfill the remainder of a vacated chancery court judge for Greene, George, and Jackson counties. Pierce was reelected to a full term in 2006 with no opposition.

Speaking of the presidential and senate elections, Pierce said he realizes his race isn’t getting much attention.

“It’s hard sometimes to notice there is a supreme court race,” Pierce said. Offering ideas, Pierce said he is supported by Judge Charles Pickering.

“I can probably sit down now,” he told the group of local Republicans. “I was told the only way to win Jones County was to win this crowd.”

“The people in this district need to choose and go in a different direction,” Pierce said. “I’ve had the opportunity to make a difference everywhere God has allowed me to be.”

A former representative for his home district, Pierce said judges shouldn’t make laws, but interpret them.

“If I wanted to make the law I should’ve stayed in the legislature,” he said.

State Treasurer Tate Reeves spoke after Pierce. He said national and state races are vitally important, but people mustn’t forget about the other races.

“I want to stress to you the importance of our supreme court races,” Reeves said.

He continued by saying people don’t need to elect judges by party or personal ideals, but by the ability to interpret laws.

“We need to elect fair judges,” Reeves said. “Bubba Pierce would be a great supreme court justice for the state. ... I urge you to get out and help in all of these campaigns.”

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. John McCain’s running mate on his run for the White House, also received some attention at the meeting. Just after the prayer and Pledge of Allegiance, the mention of her name led to a loud cheer of “Sarah! Sarah!”
