Tents, cash needed for Peru quake relief trip

By Jason Niblett/newseditor@laurelleadercall.com

When a major earthquake struck Peru a couple of weeks ago, Grace Covenant Church Pastor Scott Schiele knew he had to do something to help out. He has a friend who is from Peru, and has made the trip to South America before with that friend.

“I have a friend who is a missionary in Tulsa,” Schiele said. “He’s actually a Peruvian, but he’s an American citizen now.”

That friend has family in Lima. The earthquake’s worst damage destroyed 90 percent of homes in a city of about 100,000 people. Schiele said he and other people from this area are planning mission trips next week to help take tents, food and water. The church they will visit is the only building still standing in its neighborhood.

Schiele said someone helping with the project of building the church complained crews were using too much concrete, but it was able to withstand the earthquake.

Schiele is asking for the public’s help, he said. There is a great need for new or used tents (with all the parts) to provide housing for the thousands of homeless Peruvians. Although the church has raised some money, there is always a need for more to buy food and water. Schiele said he and his friend plan to buy the food and water in Lima and rent a truck to transport the supplies. Schiele leaves Monday and more relief volunteers will leave Thursday.

To assist in the relief effort, call (601) 649-0262 or (601) 422-7446.
