Third suspect arrested in recent drive-by shooting

By Eloria Newell James, community@laurelleadercall.com

The Laurel Police Department has apprehended its third suspect in a recent weekend drive-by shooting.

Police officers arrested two people last week following the alleged drive-by shooting while they continued to look for a third male.

Investigator Stephen Bullock with the Laurel Police Department said he and Lt. Kevin Jackson arrested Roderiqus Brown, 18, of Laurel this weekend in connection with the Aug. 22 shooting in the 1300 block of Ferrill Street.

The Laurel Police Department arrested two suspects last week in connection to the shooting. Then, Bullock and Jackson were able to apprehend Brown, the third suspect, this weekend on 12th Street.

Bullock said the arrests are a result of an incident that occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 22) when officers responded to a call of shots fired.

“Officer Mitch Sumrall and David Grasha responded to a shots fired call in the Ferrill Street area. Once there, they talked to three individuals who reported that a gold-colored pickup truck came through and fired several shots into the directions of these (three) subjects,” Bullock said. “Upon further investigation it was determined that the alleged shooter was Devonta Moffett, a 16-year-old, of Laurel; and the alleged driver of the vehicle was Curtis Heidelberg, also a 16-year-old of Laurel.”

Bullock said at least five shots were reportedly fired during the incident. However, no injuries were reported from the incident.

Bullock said Devonta Moffett was arrested Wednesday (Aug. 26) and Curtis Heidelberg was arrested Thursday (Aug. 27) in connection with the incident.

According to officials, Brown was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Bullock said Moffett and Heidelberg are teens from Laurel and students at Laurel High School. However, they have been charged as adults.

Bullock said they were all booked into the Jones County Detention Center on the charge of one count of drive by shooting.

“The victims are believed to have known the three suspects,” the investigator said. “Right now, we think the shooting occurred as a result of a previous argument.”

Bullock said the victims and the suspects are all in the same age group.

Bullock said the suspects had their initial court appearances in Laurel Municipal Court where their bonds were set at $100,000 each.

The suspects remain in the county jail.
