A Laurel man is behind bars after being arrested by the Laurel Police Department’s Narcotics Division in connection with allegedly selling methamphetamine.

Anthony J. Lewis, 28, of 1612 Congress St. was taken into custody by law enforcement officials Thursday evening at his mother’s residence.

LPD Narcotics Agent Stan Livingston said Lewis’ arrest is the result of an investigation, which allowed an arrest warrant for Lewis to be issued.

“We had the warrant for the sale of meth (methamphetamine). Then, when we went to arrest him, he had these packages of meth on him,” Livingston said. “Several people were at the residence at the time of his arrest.”

Lewis was charged with one count of the sell of methamphetamine and one count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Officials said when Lewis was arrested he had methamphetamine on him along with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The street value of the methamphetamine is $100 per individual package, according to officials.

Narcotics agents said manufacturing methamphetamine is not only illegal, but dangerous.

“It’s some very strong and powerful stuff that is dangerous to make,” Livingston said. “Making this stuff can be very volatile.”

Narcotic agents also praised citizens for their help in making recent drug arrests.

Sgt. Robert Strickland said his division appreciates the help it’s received.

“We commend the citizens of Laurel and Jones County for their efforts in making the calls to help rid the neighborhoods of any illegal activity,” Strickland said. “We are grateful for all they do.”

Lewis has been booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Center and is expected to be arraigned in Laurel Municipal Court, according to officials.
