Jones Co. man drowns in Leaf River

From staff reports

Authorities identified a Sunday drowning victim as Daniel Cavanzo,19, of Laurel. Jones County authorities received a 9-1-1 call at 6:20 p.m. Sunday that Cavanzo sank beneath the water of the Leaf River at Eastabuchie Park and did not resurface.

A spokesman for the Jones County Sheriff’s Department Investigative Division said the victim was swimming in the river with cousins.

Forrest County Search and Rescue and Petal Fire Department personnel located the body with the aid of an underwater camera at approximately 10:40 p.m., about 15 yards from where he was last seen. Officers with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife assisted in locating the body with an underwater camera.

AAA Ambulance Service, EmServ Ambulance Service, Jones County Emergency Operations Center, Forrest County Emergency Operations Center and Southwest Volunteer Fire Department were among the emergency personnel on scene.
