Male chorus gives service to community through music

Some males in the community have found a way to enjoy themselves and bring joy to others through a day of activities.
The United Male Chorus, which consists of male chorus groups in Jasper and Clarke counties, found joy and peace during their annual picnic held this year at Magnolia Park in Heidelberg.
Douglas Berry, a local musician and president of the overall male chorus, said the outing is the group’s annual picnic.
Berry said the group consists of five gospel male chorus _ they are Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church Male Chorus of Heidelberg, Leona U.M. Church Male Chorus, Enterprise U.M. Church Male Chorus, Ebenezer M.B. Church Male Chorus of Heidelberg and New Beaver Meadow M.B. Church Male Chorus of Heidelberg.
As a part of the annual celebration, each group prepares food and activities for the event.
Members from the various groups also perform numerous musical selections for the event.
Berry said while the goal of the group is to witness through music, the organization also works to improve the communities in their area.
“We are about helping the community,” Berry said. “We do fundraisers and help with school functions.”
Berry said the annual picnic is usually conducted in a different community each year.
“It’s a fun day for the community,” he said. “We have been doing it in different places every year, but we hope to do it here in Heidelberg each year in the future, if possible.”
Aside from the annual event, the groups also fellowship with each other by visiting the churches on a monthly rotating basis.
