Joseph Jones' appeal won't be heard
Court of Appeals denies hearing from Jones, Davis

By Jason Niblett, newseditor@laurelleadercall.com

The Mississippi Court of Appeals has denied a petition from former Laurel Ward 7 Councilman Joseph Glenn Jones for release on his conviction.

Jones County Assistant District Attorney J. Ronald Parrish said the court denied petitions from both Jones and Johnny Ray Davis, another Jones County man convicted of a sex crime.

“They lost another round,” Parrish said. “He’s (Jones) one of the most notorious sexual perverts ever to prowl the streets of Laurel.”

Jones, 47, was sentenced to 30 years — 15 served, 15 suspended — at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman for a sexual battery conviction. He was also sentenced to 30 months for attempting to escape from the Jones County Adult Detention Center. He is tentatively scheduled for release Nov. 23, 2020.

Jones was convicted for sexual battery against a girl who was 13 at the time.

Davis, 60, was sentenced to 15 years — 10 served, five suspended — after being convicted of fondling a young relative. Davis is serving his time at the Central Mississippi Correction Facility in Rankin County.
