Powers Fire & Rescue and M&M Fire & Rescue were dispatched at 11:45 A.M. Friday to a report of a one vehicle accident with injuries on Hwy. 84 East, approximately two miles east of Laurel.
Powers Rescue 1, Powers Heavy Rescue, M&M Rescue 1 and M&M Medical First Responders responded to the accident scene, along with Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna.
McKenna was the first emergency responder on the scene and advised that there were three victims in the vehicle all from the same family — an adult male driver, a teenage female and a teenage male all suffering from varying degrees of injury.
According to the adult male driver of the Chevy Equinox, which was traveling westbound on Hwy. 84, he swerved to avoid a vehicle which was moving into his lane and struck the guard rail at a bridge. The impact forced the Chevy into the median where it traveled between the two bridges and went airborne approximately seventy-five feet before hitting the ground and crashing into a small creek.
All three victims were transported by EMServ Ambulance Service, which responded with two ambulances, to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment of undisclosed injuries. The family was reported to be from Louisiana and traveling back home when the accident occurred.
Units from the Jones County Sheriff's Office, Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Department of Transportation also responded to the accident. Fire units were on the scene for nearly two hours as rescue operations and vehicle recovery operations were conducted.
