HEIDELBERG — Officials in this Jasper County town are awaiting information from the state concerning how to break a tie in an alderman’s race.
In the mayor’s race, however, Incumbent Mayor Juan Barnett had no problems defeating challenger Rev. Antroy Dewayne Gavin in Tuesday’s general election.
Barnett gained another term in office by receiving 249 votes to Gavin’s 86 votes.
Heidelberg Town Clerk Debbie Logan said the election process went smoothly Tuesday with a heavy voter turnout.
However, Logan said, the results in one city race have resulted in the need for state assistance.
“We had two contested races, the mayor’s race and the Ward Two alderman race,” Logan explained. “In the Ward Two race, incumbent Carolyn McFarland received 33 votes and the challenger, Curtis Morgan also received 33 votes.”
Because of the tie, Logan said, she contacted the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
“We are in the process of breaking the tie,” Logan said. “We are waiting on information from the Attorney General’s Office and just how to do that.
“There are several different methods to breaking a tie,” Logan added. “They will send me the information and we will go from there.”
Logan said the town elected its remaining four aldermen without opposition.
Ward One Alderman Sam Richer, Ward Three Alderman Milton Jones Sr., Ward Four Alderman Dewitt Reed and Ward Five Alderman Thomas “Tom” Lewis all ran unopposed.
Logan said she’s pleased that the town had a high voter turnout.
“Everything went well Tuesday,” the town clerk said. “We had a large turnout for a municipal race. So, people were interested in the election.”
