It was a landslide victory in the race for mayor in the city of Sandersville. When the final vote was counted, Walter “Buzz” Jack had defeated opponent Jimmy Hill by a 157 to 42 margin, or 79 percent to 21 percent of the 199 total votes cast.
Jack isn’t going into the mayor seat as a newbie on the block. He served on the Board of Alderman under two different mayors from 1989 to 1997. “I have had the experience to know what it takes to run the city,” he said. “I just hope to be able to run the city as well as “Coach” (Pat) Lightsey did.”
Lightsey, the long-time mayor, did not seek re-election.
In the Board of Alderman race, John Caraway totaled 124 votes, incumbent Bob White had 118, Sherry Lowe recorded 103 votes, incumbent Harmon Hill 121, and Floyd Herford 95.
Jack takes over the mayor’s office on July 7th.
In other races, Soso mayor Michael Moore was voted back into office, defeating challenger Mark Green by a 97-21 margin.
In Bay Springs, incumbent Mayor J.E. Smith defeated Mannix McLaurin, 450-174. In the alderman race, Steve Breland recorded 103 votes to Lynn Ainsworth’s 26 in Ward One, while in Ward Five, Bob Cook defeated Roosevelt Ulmer, 100-54.
Results from the Heidelberg mayor's race between incumbent Juan Barnett and Rev. Antroy Dewayne Gavin were not available at presstime Tuesday night.
