A Jones County man reportedly stabbed another man Tuesday afternoon during an argument in Laurel, according to reports made to the Laurel Police Department.
Investigator Stephen Bullock with the Laurel Police Department said Stephen Keys, 20, of Soso has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
Bullock said Keys’ arrest is in connection with an incident that occurred in front of a residence in the 100 block of Ferrill Place around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“Apparently, Keys was visiting his ex-girlfriend who lives in this area. Then, a verbal argument between Keys and his ex-girlfriend developed. She then struck him with a bat and called her current boyfriend,” the investigator said. “According to witnesses, the female’s new boyfriend arrived. Then, he (the current boyfriend) and Keys got into a verbal argument and the victim tried to hit Keys and missed. Keys then swung a knife and cut the victim on the left arm.”
Bullock said the victim, which has been identified as a 23-year-old male, was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment. Police said he remained in the hospital at press time.
According to police, Keys was arrested shortly after the incident Tuesday. He was officially charged with one count of aggravated assault.
Bullock said Keys is being held at the Jones County Detention Center.
He was expected to make his initial court appearance Wednesday in Laurel Municipal Court.
