The Jones County Sheriff's Department will be out in force May 19-June 1, participating in the “Click It or Ticket” enforcement mobilization, according to Sheriff Alex Hodge.

“In 2007, Mississippi had a safety belt use of 71.8 percent, with 64.7 percent safety belt use in pickup trucks,” he said. “Unfortunately, too many people still do not buckle up every time for every trip, and every five seconds a traffic accident occurs.

“For those drivers who choose not to wear a safety belt during this intensified enforcement period, being cited may result in an unwelcome fine, but it's better than paying with their life. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 4-34, but wearing a safety belt is the simplest and least expensive way to reduce deaths and serious injuries.

“This program is designed to remind vehicle occupants to make the conscious decision to buckle up each time they get into a vehicle, whether as the driver or a passenger,” Hodge said.

Hodge released the following schedule for safety checkpoints:

• Monday, May 19 — 5-8 p.m.

• Thursday, May 22 — 8-11 p.m.

• Saturday, May 24 — 9 p.m.-midnight.

• Sunday, May 25 — 3-6 p.m.,

• Tuesday, May 27 — 2-5 p.m.

• Friday, May 29 — 8 p.m .-midnight.

• Saturday, May 31 — 8 p.m.-midnight.
