The grand jury meeting at the Jones County Courthouse in Laurel last week indicted two men in connection with recent murders in the county. They were served with the papers Monday at the Jones County Adult Detention Center, where each has been held since their arrest.
Indicted and formally charged with murder are Matthew Reese Wood, 19, of Laurel, and Kenneth Demond Jones, 23, of Taylorsville.
Wood is charged in connection with the recent murder of his father, Herman Maurice Wood, 55, an employee of the maintenance department of Jones County, in early March. Wood was shot once in the back of his head on Radio Road, and died several days later.
Jones was indicted in connection with the October 24 shooting death of DeMarrio Crosby, 18, of the Summerland Community. Preliminary results from the autopsy performed by the State Medical Examiner’s office indicated that Crosby was shot once in the face from a range of six to eight inches.
As the shooting occurred, according to investigators, Crosby was holding his one-year-old son in a child carrier seat. Witnesses said Crosby was lying on his driveway and the baby was in the car seat next to him. Diapers were scattered over the driveway, and a baby bottle was nearby, authorities said.
Jones later surrendered to deputies.
