Taking a look at some items stacked on a bed in room 39 at the Magnolia Motel can make one wonder why anyone would be interested in putting those items into one’s body.

But, the Jones County Sheriff’s Department found someone who was allegedly interested in doing just that, and sharing his concoction with others, Saturday night.

Sheriff Alex Hodge said his agency received a tip and started to work gathering information.

“It was an active working meth lab,” Hodge told the Leader-Call.

David L. Beasley, 29, of 20 Miracle Lane in Jones County, faces manufacture of methamphetamine and possession of two or more precursor charges. He was arrested by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Center.

Citing the danger of the chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine, a bystander and a Laurel Leader-Call crew were asked to keep a distance of several feet from the entrance of the room.

An MBN agent used a special mask and self contained breathing apparatus while he shut the lab down and gathered evidence. Hodge said the DEA out of Pensacola, Fla., was called in to clean up the lab.

“When it’s actually a working lab, it’s a haz-mat team cleaning it up,” Hodge said.
