Clean it up, Jones County!

— The Keep Laurel Jones County Beautiful Committee proudly announces its 19th Annual Great American Cleanup for April 20-25.
The week-long event will kick-off on Monday, April 20, at 9 a.m. on the steps of the Jones County Courthouse.
GAC Event Chairman, Tim Waldrup, will issue a challenge to the community to pledge their support by picking up their property and heavily littered areas of Jones County. Local entertainment will be present with patriotic numbers and proclamations of support will be presented from the Jones County Board of Supervisors and the cities of Laurel, Ellisville, Sandersville and Soso. The public is invited to come and show their support of this event and the community.
Cash awards will be presented to in five categories. A $100 check will be awarded to the business/organization with the largest number of volunteers, the business/organization with the largest number of trash bags filled with litter, the school with the largest number of volunteers participating, and the school with the largest number of trash bags filled with litter. A $50 award will go to the individual collecting the most trash. To be eligible for consideration in these events you must contact the Jones County Chamber of Commerce at 601-428-0574 prior to the event and register you or your organization. Litter collection totals must be reported back to the Chamber after the event – no later than Wednesday, April 29th.
Sponsors of the event have donated additional money to be given away in “Money Eggs”. Forty eggs will be hidden in heavily littered areas that have been registered for pickup that will have slips of paper recognizing the finder as a $20 cash winner.
Any individual finding one of these eggs must bring the egg and slip of paper to the event celebration at Cotton Mill Park on the 25th to claim their award.
Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., those participating in the cleanup are invited to attend the celebration at Cotton Mill Park. Refreshments will be available to “thank” those who actively participated in cleaning up their community. A grand prize drawing will be held from those attending the celebration. A Troy-Bilt straight shaft string trimmer and back pack blower will be given away to some lucky individual.
Area elected officials will be on hand to voice their support of the event and to encourage the citizens of Jones County to take pride in keeping our community litter free.
