Newpaper racks broken into

By Jason Niblett, newseditor@laurelleadercall.com

Three different law enforcement agencies are investigating thefts against several of the Laurel Leader-Call’s racks Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Lisa Miller, circulation director for the Leader-Call, said the thefts occurred along Highway 15 from Laurel to Bay Springs. She also said another rack had been broken into in the Myrick area. Miller said the thefts were small because most of the money had already been removed for the day.

“Not much money was taken because racks were cleaned out already,” Miller said.

The Leader-Call, using random video surveillance, has caught several people over the past several months taking newspapers and money from racks. Depending on the amount of money stolen, or the amount of damage to a rack, the crime can be classified as either a misdemeanor or a felony. A misdemeanor can be punishable by a fine or up to a year in prison.

The Laurel Police Department, Bay Springs Police Department, and Jones County Sheriff’s Department are each investigating the thefts. Anyone with information is asked to call any of those agencies, Crimestoppers at (601) 428-STOP, or the Leader-Call at (601) 428-0551.
