Democratic party meeting
The Jones County Democratic Party will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 12 at the Jones County Circuit Courthouse in Laurel. We will discuss registering new voters at this meeting. All Democrats are invited and encouraged to attend.
Blood drive
There will be a community blood drive, sponsored by Holston Real Estate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, in the Bloodmobile at Holston Real Estate, located at 504 Hill Street in Ellisville. LJC registration
The 19th class of Leadership Jones County is currently accepting applications. Deadline is August 8. Monthly sessions start in October. Tuition is $300, but a few scholarships are available. Call the EDA/Chamber of Commerce at 601-649-3031 for information.
Ainsworth-Gunter reunion
The Ainsworth-Gunter reunion will be held from 9 a.m. until on August 16. The reunion is back at Dixie Electric Power Association due to a scheduling problem with the community center last year. Flag retirement
A flag retirement service will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the supervisors’ building on County Rd. 8 in Heidelberg. Jasper County has one of the highest rates of fire-related deaths in Mississippi – that’s why the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is offering free smoke alarms for Jasper County residents. Night out parade

NAACP to meet
The Laurel-Jones County NAACP will hold their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 7, at the Cook’s Ave. Voting precinct. The general public and all members and officers are invited to attend this meeting.
Magnolia Cruisers to meet
The Magnolia Cruisers new meeting location is the Pleasant Ridge Community Center. The first meeting there will be at 7 p.m. August 5. The Pleasant Ridge Community Center is located on Holly Road.

Homeschool fair
The Third Annual Homeschool Fair Aug. 16 at William Carey College, sponsored by Christian Home Educators of Hattiesburg. JCSD Jump Start
All elementary schools in the Jones County School District will hold Jump Start for kindergarten students on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 1-3 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Kindergarten students and their parents/guardians are encouraged to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. The first full day of school for all students will be Wednesday, Aug. 6.
JCSD open house
The Jones County School District has scheduled an open house for all students in grades one through seven on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Teachers and administrators at all elementary schools in the district and the three middle schools invite students and their parents/guardians to attend this open house. The first full day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Powers water meeting

Northeast Jones Open House

ESS early intervention
Ellisville State School’s Early Intervention Program, 207 S. 11th Ave., Laurel, is offering free educational services for children from birth to three with disabilities who live in the surrounding area. Services are provided in the child’s home and community, including special instruction, physical therapy, speech therapy, parent coaching, and support. Forestry/Wildlife festival
On Saturday, Sept. 27, Clarke County will hold its 18th annual Forestry & Wildlife Festival at Archusa Water Park in Quitman. The festival is sponsored by the Clarke County Chamber of Commerce. The festival will begin at 8 a.m. and will offer activities for every age group. Arts and crafts, live entertainment, lots of good food, exhibits, soccer tournament, pony rides, a petting zoo, a show by “Jones on Stage” from Jones County Junior College and Bluegrass by “Track 45.” Dune Buggy, the clown, will be on hand all day and will provide lots of clean family fun for residents and tourists. TV giveaway

Summer food program
The Laurel Housing Authority is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Meals will be provided at the sites and times as follows. Meals will be offered from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. beginning Monday through Friday, June 2 - August 1. Meals will be served at the following sites: James A. Townley Center, 516 S., 13th Avenue, Brown Circle, 50 Brown Circle, Windsor Court, 20 Windsor Court, L. T. Volunteer nurses needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking nurses or licensed EMT’s to assist with their Wednesday morning Blood Pressure checks each week. Volunteers are asked to work one Wednesday morning a month from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Chapter in downtown Laurel. The program is designed to monitor blood pressure for elderly clients or those who suffer from high blood pressure and need weekly readings.
