Caregiver’s workshop
Many caregivers and patients become isolated due to the patient’s illness. This isolation limits the family’s support and knowledge base. The upcoming workshop is designed to provide caregivers with valuable information that will allow them to make informed decisions for there loved ones. Trained professionals will be available throughout the workshop. No registration required and the public is invited. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. May 21 at South Central Place.

Blues Bash
The Laurel Rogers Museum of Art will hold its 15th Annual Blues Bash from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. June 6 on the front lawn of the museum. The event will feature music by Bill “Howl-n-Madd” Perry and barbecue by the Smokehouse of Laurel. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased by calling the museum at 601-649-6374 by June 4.

Veterans cookout
Veterans and military personnel and spouses are invited to Southern Industrial Contractors, Inc. 18th annual cookout honoring America’s veterans and military service personnel June 7, #6 Jimmy Aycock Drive in Bay Springs. Registration and social from noon - 4 p.m. The program begins at 4 p.m. with dinner to follow. This is a free event for veterans, service personnel and special guest. Memorial Day service
The Veteran’s Memorial Museum, located on Hillcrest Drive will host Memorial Day Services May 26 at 10:30 a.m. The musuem will also unveil the Arizona memorial at the event. For more information call 601-428-4008.

Retired educators to meet
Retired Education Personnel of Jones County will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Gardiner School. Annie Ulmer will give the devotion and State Representative Omeria McDonald Scott will be the guest speaker.
This will be the last meeting this school term, so all retired education personnel of Jones County are encouraged to attend.

NEJ 1978 to meet
Members of the Northeast Jones Class of 1978 will meet Sunday, May 18, to discuss plans for a 30-year class reunion. Masonite neighborhood reunion
There will be a Masonite neighborhood reunion from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday at Dixie Electric on Hwy. 184 E. Anyone living near Masonite during the 1950s and 1960s or who attended South Laurel Baptist Church is invited. Please take a covered dish. Lunch will be served at noon. MOAA to meet
The Pine Belt Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold its monthly meeting noon May 21 at the Laurel Country Club. The luncheon meeting is open to all active duty military officers, former officers, members of the Reserve and National Guard, retirees, and their surviving spouses. Members are encouraged to invite guests.

Bustin Reunion

Rec plan meetings
The Mississippi Department Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is updating the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan and is hosting public meetings to receive input on the recreational needs of the citizens. The closest meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 21 at the Southern Miss. Planning & Development District at 700 Hardy Street in Hattiesburg.

WJHS Class of 1993
West Jones class of 1993 15 year class reunion will be October 18th, 2008 at the Laurel Hotel and Convention Center at 7:00 p.m. Reservation deadline is July 30, 2008. Craven anniversary party
There will be an anniversary party for Roy and Lynn Craven of Laurel at the V.F.W., Post 3042 in Laurel beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Open to the public. There will be food and a live band. There will be no coverage charge.

AARP to meet
AARP Chapter #4016 will meet at the Veterans Museum at 9 a.m. May 19. Robert Bartran will be the guest speaker. The Veterans Museum is located at 920 Hillcrest Drive across from the Dixie Golf Course. Lunch will be furnished. Blood pressure and sugar test will not be given at this meeting.

BBQ chicken sale
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross, in conjunction with Western Sizzlin,’ is selling tickets for bar-b-que chicken plates to raise funds for the local chapter which covers Jasper, Jones, Wayne and Smith Counties. The bar-b-que will be held from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, May 23. $5 per plate. The plate includes leg quarters, beans, slaw and bread. If we have sales of at least five plates from a business, we can deliver the plates at a specified time. Deadline to order delivery is 4 p.m. May 14. BBQ ribs sale
There will be a bar-b-que rib sale at Clyde Howard Masonic Lodge #525 F & AM from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. May 17. The cost will be $15 for a rack.

LHS retirement reception
Laurel High School will host a reception on May 19 in honor of those retiring at the end of the school year. The reception will be held from 3-5:30 p.m. in the school’s foyer. Carolyn Stone, Lillian McDonald, Charlotte Cahill and Jane Bryant will be honored. The public is invited to attend.

Fedora to speak
Southern Miss Alumni Association Laurel Metro Chapter Spring Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at Jones County Junior College Advanced Technology Center. Larry Fedora, head football coach, will be the special guest. Cost will be $15 per person, $25 per couple. An auction will be held and door prizes awarded. All proceeds will benefit Southern Miss scholarships. Long family reunion
Descendants of the Rev. William Preston Long and Adeline Melinda Harris Long will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 18, for their 90th annual reunion. Taste of So. Miss. Food Festival
The Mississippi Voter’s Association will host a Taste of Southern Mississippi Food Festival in Mason Park from July 4-6. Free to the public. There will be food vendors and musical entertainment. Bogue Homa Lake open
Bogue Homa Lake in Jones County is now open to boating and skiing only. The lake is not open to fishing and won’t be for another two years at least. The lake is open from noon until sunset Thursday through Sunday weekly.

Local Relay for Life DVD
The Laurel Leader-Call will produce DVDs featuring the Jones County Relay for Life as part of the team’s fundraiser. Preorders will be accepted during the Relay for Life event, scheduled for May 2 at the Laurel SportsPlex, or at the newspaper office. Cost is $15, and proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. LRMA exhibitions
The Laurel Rogers Museum of Art presents The Floating World: Ukiyo-e Prints from the Wallace B. Rogers Collection in the Lower Level Galleries through July 13 and David Hayes: Sculpture on the LRMA grounds through Aug. 31. The museum is open from 10 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 until 4 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free, but donations and support are welcome.

White scholarship established
A scholarship in memory of Cliff White, a former student and ball player at NEJ, who was recently killed in an automobile accident on Hwy. 84 East, has been established for an outstanding athlete at Northeast Jones High School. White was a football and baseball coach for teams in Myrick and Laurel. He was greatly loved by many and will be remembered forever by family and friends. Anyone interested in being a contributor to the “Cliff White Memorial Scholarship” may send a check or money order to Northeast Jones High School. Fire family household boxes needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking community groups who would help with gathering and assembling special household items for families who lose their homes in time of disaster. Three different categories of items are needed including eating utensils, cooking utensils, and boxes of linens to help families set up household after a fire or other disaster. Swingshift Band at Moose Lodge
The Swingshift Band will be playing at the Laurel Moose Lodge, 2503 Moose Drive, across from Dixie Golf, every Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight. The band is playing in the old Bingo Hall. Volunteer nurses needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking nurses or licensed EMT’s to assist with their Wednesday morning Blood Pressure checks each week. Volunteers are asked to work one Wednesday morning a month from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Chapter in downtown Laurel. The program is designed to monitor blood pressure for elderly clients or those who suffer from high blood pressure and need weekly readings. Working in this program provides work hours for retired medical volunteers to maintain their license in retirement. Anyone interested should contact Peggy at 601-426-9071.

Cancer support group to meet
The South Central Regional Medical Center American Cancer Society Support Group meets the second Monday each month at 6 p.m. at South Central Place. GED testing offered at JCJC
Jones County Junior College is now offering the GED test at night. Advanced registration is required, and the cost is $40. Registration is held every Thursday, at 1 p.m. in the Adult Basic Education Building on the JCJC campus.
