Flag cheerleader registration
Calhoun Jets Flag Cheerleader Registration, for kindergarten-third grade students, will be held at the Calhoun Community Center, Thursday, May 8 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Please take a copy of your birth certificate and the $100 registration fee. Final $100.00 due by June 1. Price includes uniform, shorts, t-shirt, shoes, hair bow, socks, poms, cheerleader duffel bag, bloomers, and water bottle. Sponsors: Sonya Sumrall and Allison Maxey. The Jones County Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct a Fish Pond Field Day on May 14, at Larry Walters, off Lyons Ranch Road. The Field Day will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon. Bogue Homa Lake Bogue Homa Lake in Jones County is now open to boating and skiing only. The lake is not open to fishing and won’t be for another two years at least. The lake is open from noon until sunset Thursday through Sunday weekly.

The Magnolia Center on Ellisville Blvd. has several events planned for the next few months. At 7:30 p.m. May 2, there will be a benefit bull bash. The Laurel School District is developing its annual Consolidated Federal Programs Application. The Consolidated Federal Programs Application includes Title I (Improving Basic Programs), Title II (Teacher/Principal Training and Recruitment and Class Size Reduction, Title IV (Safe/Drug Free Schools and Communities) and Title V (Innovative Programs). The Laurel Leader-Call will produce DVDs featuring the Jones County Relay for Life as part of the team’s fundraiser. Prostate cancer ed program
The American Cancer Society's Man to Man prostate cancer educational program helps men cope with prostate cancer by providing information and peer support to assist in the recovery process. Man to Man is a forum for men to learn about diagnosis and treatment options through presentations, written materials and videos. Specialists in various fields related to prostate cancer share information on medical and quality of life issues, such as research and treatment. Men living with prostate cancer also share stories about their journey. Other Man to Man activities are offered to assist in the recovery process. LRMA exhibitions
The Laurel Rogers Museum of Art presents The Floating World: Ukiyo-e Prints from the Wallace B. Rogers Collection in the Lower Level Galleries through July 13 and David Hayes: Sculpture on the LRMA grounds through Aug. 31. Bevill family benefit
A benefit for Kathy S. Purvis Bevill and Anthony Bevill will be held May 3 at the Smith County Multi-Purpose Building in Raleigh. The Bevill family were involved in a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver Saturday, Feb. 2, on Highway 11. Three victims were treated and released, but the mother remained hospitalized several days and the father faced life-threatening injuries. Life Line Screening
Life Line Screening will be at Union Seminary Baptist Church on May 6, at 1844 County R. 8 in Laurel. There will be a stroke and osteoporosis screening. Appointments will begin at 10 a.m. The complete screening package now includes a new heart rhythm screening, checking for irregular heartbeats which is a major risk factor for stroke. Register for a Wellness Package with Heart Rhythm for $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete.
Shady Grove celebration

The City of Laurel will soon begin ticketing drivers who violate parking rules downtown, especially those parked in slots not labeled for parking and in those slots with time limits. The tickets will begin as warnings.

White scholarship established
A scholarship in memory of Cliff White, a former student and ball player at NEJ, who was recently killed in an automobile accident on Hwy. 84 East, has been established for an outstanding athlete at Northeast Jones High School. White was a football and baseball coach for teams in Myrick and Laurel. He was greatly loved by many and will be remembered forever by family and friends. Fire family household boxes needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking community groups who would help with gathering and assembling special household items for families who lose their homes in time of disaster. Three different categories of items are needed including eating utensils, cooking utensils, and boxes of linens to help families set up household after a fire or other disaster. Volunteer nurses needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking nurses or licensed EMT’s to assist with their Wednesday morning Blood Pressure checks each week. Volunteers are asked to work one Wednesday morning a month from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Chapter in downtown Laurel. The program is designed to monitor blood pressure for elderly clients or those who suffer from high blood pressure and need weekly readings. Working in this program provides work hours for retired medical volunteers to maintain their license in retirement. Anyone interested should contact Peggy at 601-426-9071.
