Sandersville Neighborhood Watch
There will be a Neighborhood Watch meeting in Sandersville May 1 at 6:30 p.m. at town hall. Speaker will be Amy Adelman — counselor.

Day in the Park
The 36th annual Day in the Park Arts and Crafts Festival will be held from 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in Mason Park in Laurel. Day in the Park 5K Run and one mile Fun Run will be at 8 a.m. in Mason Park (rain or shine). Run through the Historic District. For information call Beth Thompson at 601-649-5414.

Sons of American Revolution
The next meeting of the Laurel Chapter Sons of the American Revolution shall be at noon May 31 at Ryan's restaurant in Laurel. Kindly join us. Ladies are welcome. Our speaker shall be the Rev. Dr. John Killian, a fellow SAR member. He will continue our theme for 2008, The Constitution, by presenting a speech entitled, "Ulster and The US Constitution." Reservations are not required.

Bogue Homa Lake open
Bogue Homa Lake in Jones County is now open to boating and skiing only. The lake is not open to fishing and won’t be for another two years at least. The lake is open from noon until sunset Thursday through Sunday weekly.

Council of Negro Women events
The National Council of Negro Women will meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at 220 East 1st St. for their regular meeting. The National Council of Negro Women’s annual banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Laurel Train Depot. Proceeds will benefit the 2009 State Conference. Donation will be $10. National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer will begin at noon Thursday, May 1, on the Courthouse steps in both Laurel and Ellisville and conclude by 1 p.m. Please bring your lawn chairs and join us as we pray for God to intervene for our great nation. Hill annual reunion
The descendants of Caleb Atkisson Hill and Mary Ann Smith Hill will have their annual reunion Saturday, May 3, beginning at 5 p.m. at the SoSo Community Center. Jordan World Circus
The Magnolia Center on Ellisville Blvd. has several events planned for the next few months. The Jordan World Circus takes place at 7 p.m. April 30. At 7:30 p.m. May 2, there will be a benefit bull bash. On May 11 at 3 p.m., the annual Mother’s Day Blues Festival is scheduled. Finally, a flea market/antique show is scheduled 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. June 21 and 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. June 22.

LSD developing application
The Laurel School District is developing its annual Consolidated Federal Programs Application. The Consolidated Federal Programs Application includes Title I (Improving Basic Programs), Title II (Teacher/Principal Training and Recruitment and Class Size Reduction, Title IV (Safe/Drug Free Schools and Communities) and Title V (Innovative Programs). Parents with planning input or suggestions should contact Kenda Covington, Director of State and Federal Programs, at 601-649-6391 or the principal of their child’s school by May 9.

AARP driver safety
South Central Regional Medical Center will sponsor another AARP Driver Safety Program May 1 and 2 at the hospital. Classes will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone age 50 plus may take the two-day course and receive a discount on automobile insurance (driving record considered.) The fee is $10 payable at class time. There will be no driving or tests. Those wishing more information or to register please call Yvonne Farr at 601-428-0168. Registration is not binding, simple a means to have enough materials on hand for all students. Walk-ins will be welcome.

LLT kids camp
The Laurel Little Theatre Kids Camp, featuring Disney’s “The Jungle Book,” takes place June 2-8 from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. For more information or to sign up, call 601-297-5157 or e-mail dancediva@c-gate.net. NEJ C/O ‘78 to meet

Luminaries for Relay for Life
The Laurel Leader-Call is joining area teams in selling luminaries in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of those who have died. Orders may be placed at the Leader-Call’s office. The luminaries, at a cost of $10 each, will be used during the Relay for Life event May 2.

Local Relay for Life DVD
The Laurel Leader-Call will produce DVDs featuring the Jones County Relay for Life as part of the team’s fundraiser. Preorders will be accepted during the Relay for Life event, scheduled for May 2 at the Laurel SportsPlex, or at the newspaper office. Cost is $15, and proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Movie Star reunion
All former employees of Ellisville Movie Star Factory will have a reunion beginning at 10 a.m. with lunch at 12 noon on May 3. The reunion will take place at Pendorff Community Center. Prostate cancer ed program
The American Cancer Society's Man to Man prostate cancer educational program helps men cope with prostate cancer by providing information and peer support to assist in the recovery process. Man to Man is a forum for men to learn about diagnosis and treatment options through presentations, written materials and videos. Specialists in various fields related to prostate cancer share information on medical and quality of life issues, such as research and treatment. Men living with prostate cancer also share stories about their journey. Other Man to Man activities are offered to assist in the recovery process. Pleasant Ridge reunion
The Pleasant Ridge School reunion will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. May 10 at West Jones Elementary School Gymnasium. LRMA exhibitions
The Laurel Rogers Museum of Art presents The Floating World: Ukiyo-e Prints from the Wallace B. Rogers Collection in the Lower Level Galleries through July 13 and David Hayes: Sculpture on the LRMA grounds through Aug. 31. The museum is open from 10 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 until 4 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free, but donations and support are welcome.

PAD screening
As part of Wellness Wednesdays, South Central Regional Medical Center will conduct a free Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) screening. Wednesday, April 30th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at South Central Place. Watkins Class of 1965
The next quarterly meeting of the R. H. Watkins Class of 1965 Supper Club (all class members and guests) will be on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Charlie's Catfish on Ellisville Blvd. No reservation nor RSVP is required. The Zachariah Taylor Mozingo and Henry Duncan Smith reunion will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Maynor Creek Water Park. Please take a covered dish and enjoy the fun.

Frozen food sale
Immaculate Conception School in Laurel will have their spring frozen food sale from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 9 in the Parish Hall. Join us for a soup lunch that day also. There will be homemade casseroles, soups, gumbo, breads, desserts and much more. Proceeds go to support ICS.

Bevill family benefit
A benefit for Kathy S. Purvis Bevill and Anthony Bevill will be held May 3 at the Smith County Multi-Purpose Building in Raleigh. The Bevill family were involved in a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver Saturday, Feb. 2, on Highway 11. Three victims were treated and released, but the mother remained hospitalized several days and the father faced life-threatening injuries. An account at Trustmark National Bank has also been set up under Mrs. Bevill’s name. For more information, call 601-847-7417.

Federated women to meet
The Laurel Federated Women Club will have a Mother’s Day Extravaganza event for its annual scholarship fundraiser at 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Laurel Train Depot. Tickets are $10 per person. For tickets, please call Lillie Lindsey at 601-649-3518. Entertainment will be provided.

Father/Son banquet
Stainton Elementary School’s first Father and Son Banquet will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the school auditorium. The keynote speaker will be District Five Supervisor, Jerome Wyatt.

May Day
St. John’s Day School will host their annual May Day “Route 66” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 2. Come and enjoy K/3 - 6th graders perform for everyone. Odom reunion

Life Line Screening
Life Line Screening will be at Union Seminary Baptist Church on May 6, at 1844 County R. 8 in Laurel. There will be a stroke and osteoporosis screening. Appointments will begin at 10 a.m. The complete screening package now includes a new heart rhythm screening, checking for irregular heartbeats which is a major risk factor for stroke. Register for a Wellness Package with Heart Rhythm for $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete.

Shady Grove celebration
The Shady Grove PTO would like to invite you to attend a celebration of the Shady Grove School. This will be the last year the school is open and we want to have a time of fun and fellowship as we recall the “good ole days” and see a glimpse of the future. So join us from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. May 9. Downtown parking tickets
The City of Laurel will soon begin ticketing drivers who violate parking rules downtown, especially those parked in slots not labeled for parking and in those slots with time limits. The tickets will begin as warnings.

The Mississippi Watermelon Festival is searching for all past Mississippi Watermelon Queens. 2008 will mark the 30th anniversary of the annual festival and we want to recognize as many of the past queens as we can. White scholarship established
A scholarship in memory of Cliff White, a former student and ball player at NEJ, who was recently killed in an automobile accident on Hwy. 84 East, has been established for an outstanding athlete at Northeast Jones High School. White was a football and baseball coach for teams in Myrick and Laurel. He was greatly loved by many and will be remembered forever by family and friends. Anyone interested in being a contributor to the “Cliff White Memorial Scholarship” may send a check or money order to Northeast Jones High School. Fire family household boxes needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking community groups who would help with gathering and assembling special household items for families who lose their homes in time of disaster. Three different categories of items are needed including eating utensils, cooking utensils, and boxes of linens to help families set up household after a fire or other disaster. Swingshift Band at Moose Lodge
The Swingshift Band will be playing at the Laurel Moose Lodge, 2503 Moose Drive, across from Dixie Golf, every Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight. The band is playing in the old Bingo Hall. Volunteer nurses needed
The Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking nurses or licensed EMT’s to assist with their Wednesday morning Blood Pressure checks each week. Volunteers are asked to work one Wednesday morning a month from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Chapter in downtown Laurel. The program is designed to monitor blood pressure for elderly clients or those who suffer from high blood pressure and need weekly readings. Working in this program provides work hours for retired medical volunteers to maintain their license in retirement. Anyone interested should contact Peggy at 601-426-9071.

Cancer support group to meet
The South Central Regional Medical Center American Cancer Society Support Group meets the second Monday each month at 6 p.m. at South Central Place.

GED testing offered at JCJC
Jones County Junior College is now offering the GED test at night. Advanced registration is required, and the cost is $40. Registration is held every Thursday, at 1 p.m. in the Adult Basic Education Building on the JCJC campus.
