Students learn about weather

By Jason Niblett/newseditor@laurelleadercall.com

The Glade community is no stranger to extreme weather events. At different times throughout Jones County’s history the community has been impacted by tornadoes and severe storms.

But, as most people know, there are many, many other aspects to weather. There are statistics for wind speed, wind direction, temperatures, amount of rainfall, etc. Glade Elementary School teacher Gail Hickey worked this week to explain to her sixth grade classes that there is much more to weather than just tornadoes and extreme conditions. The students, in turn, were able to help keep official weather records for agencies.

“It’s to teach children how to collect the information, the different factors of weather,” Hickey said.

Students were assigned different jobs. As she helped the students gather information, she was able to share information.

“When our barometric pressure rises or falls, our weather changes. We have a front,” she explained.

Students at several other schools in the area were also involved in the special project.
