ELLISVILLE — The Lady Bobcats kept their slim playoff hopes alive Saturday, taking a 3-2 win over Co-Lin here Saturday morning.
Lauren Sanford put Jones Junior College on top in the first half, as she scored on a free kick as the keeper stepped out of the box holding the ball.
In the second half, Kristen Cavener scored in the 49th minute as Sanford took a shot that bounced back and Cavener took the rebound and put it back in.
In the 62nd minute, Co-Lin’s Amber Bowan scored and then followed up with another on seven minutes later. That knotted the score, but only for three minutes as Sanford scored the game winner on a break away.
“It was a very competitive game,” said JCJC head coach Oleg Baleyev. “Even though in the first half I felt comfortable, I knew there was one girl on that team — she could run and she could score.”
Baleyev made a defensive change after the final three scores to hold onto the win.
The Lady Bobcats, 7-6 overall, improve to 7-4 in division play, and must beat Gulf Coast by four to make it to the playoffs.
Bobcats 4, Co-Lin 0
The Bobcats are pretty much out of the playoff picture, even though they pounded Co-Lin 4-0.
JCJC put the game-winner in quick, as Clay Stewart gave the ball up to Aaron Meadows from the midfield and Meadows scored from the left side.
In the 13th minute, Zack Mills came down the right side, crossed the ball over to Brett Barlow who scored his first goal of the year.
Near the end of the first half, Justin Blair broke away through the middle to beat the goalie one-on-one.
In the second half with mostly freshmen playing, Brandon Bennett crossed the ball to Mills who scored the fourth goal.
“For the first time, I was able to sit down and enjoy the game,” Baleyev said. “We had opportunities, scored the goals, got ahead of them early in the game.
“I was able to play all 21 players,” Baleyev said. “I was able to look at my freshmen and see if they would step up.”
Jones took 16 shots on goal to the Wolves’ 12, as Bobcat keeper Toby Lewis had five saves and keeper Jonathan Foltz had three saves.
